How To Treat A Concubine

Posted in Bible on May 31st, 2011 by Phil Ferguson – 1 Comment

New blog idea.  Once a week I could do a post on the bible or a bible story.  What do you think?  Any topic suggestions?

Here is one to get you started.  Judges 19:22-29

22 While they were enjoying themselves, some of the wicked men of the city surrounded the house. Pounding on the door, they shouted to the old man who owned the house, “Bring out the man who came to your house so we can have sex with him.”

23 The owner of the house went outside and said to them, “No, my friends, don’t be so vile. Since this man is my guest, don’t do this outrageous thing. 24 Look, here is my virgin daughter, and his concubine. I will bring them out to you now, and you can use them and do to them whatever you wish. But as for this man, don’t do such an outrageous thing.”

25 But the men would not listen to him. So the man took his concubine and sent her outside to them, and they raped her and abused her throughout the night, and at dawn they let her go. 26 At daybreak the woman went back to the house where her master was staying, fell down at the door and lay there until daylight.

27 When her master got up in the morning and opened the door of the house and stepped out to continue on his way, there lay his concubine, fallen in the doorway of the house, with her hands on the threshold. 28 He said to her, “Get up; let’s go.” But there was no answer. Then the man put her on his donkey and set out for home.

29 When he reached home, he took a knife and cut up his concubine, limb by limb, into twelve parts and sent them into all the areas of Israel.

Posted in Islam on May 30th, 2011 by Phil Ferguson – Comments Off on Sharia Law – Girl, 19, Stoned To Death After Beauty Contest

via mail online.

A teenage Muslim girl was stoned to death under ‘Sharia law’ after taking part in a beauty contest in Ukraine.

Katya Koren, 19, was found dead in a village in the Crimea region near her home.

Friends said she liked wearing fashionable clothes and had come seventh in a beauty contest. Her battered body was buried in a forest and was found a week after she disappeared.

Police have opened a murder probe and are investigating claims that three Muslim youths killed her claiming her death was justified under Islam.

One of the three – named as 16-year-old Bihal Gaziev – is under arrest and told police she had ‘violated the laws of Sharia’.
Gaziev said he had no regrets about her death because she had violated the laws of Islam.

Sharia Law!  This is what you get when people that follow and evil god get control.

Saudi Prince Understands The Value Of Oil

Via CNN.

The best part is near the end.

“We don’t want the West to go and find alternatives, because, clearly, the higher the price of oil goes, the more they have incentives to go and find alternatives,”

Like any commodity it comes down to supply and demand.  We will never run out of oil but, It could get very expensive.  The question is do we want to find alternatives only after are backs are against the wall or should we plan ahead and transition to alternate fuel on our own schedule?

Homophobia Causes catholic church To Screw Over 300 Kids In Illinois.

via The Chicago Tribune.

Catholic Charities of Rockford announced Thursday that the agency will halt its state-funded foster care and adoption services Wednesday — the day civil unions take effect in Illinois.

OH NO!  Two caring adults may want to take care of a child!  How dare the state force them to behave in accordance to the modern standard of morality.

The decision is the first of what could become a domino effect of Catholic Charities leaving the foster care and adoption business to avoid liability if state law requires them to place children with parents in civil unions — either gay or straight.

In Rockford, the decision could displace about 350 foster children served by Catholic Charities and put 58 employees out of work.

I guess we know how much value they place on the kids.

Officials cited a lack of clarity in the Illinois Religious Freedom Protection and Civil Unions Act, which does not specify whether religious child welfare agencies must place children with couples in civil unions.

Without a specific provision protecting religious agencies, church officials said, the agency can’t risk losing state contracts or facing lawsuits if it turns away gay couples or others in civil unions. State funds make up about half of Catholic Charities of Rockford’s $7.5 million operating budget.

What?  They get half of their money from the state?  Another example of my tax dollars going to fund specific religious programs.

“While we understand leaving this work will be very painful for our client families, employees, volunteers, donors and prayerful supporters, we can no longer contract with the state of Illinois whose laws would force us to participate in activity offensive to the moral teachings of the church — teachings which compel us to do this work in the first place,” said Frank Vonch, director of social services for the Diocese of Rockford, which includes Kane and McHenry counties.

I’m offended that their moral teaching will put 350 kids at risk.  They should never have been in this position.  I feel for all of the kids and families that will suffer from this thoughtless tantrum.  I’m sure that we will end up with a better system in the future.

In addition to Catholic Charities in five regions, Lutheran Child and Family Services and the Evangelical Child and Family Agency have policies that exclude prospective parents who are not married.

I guess they will close next.  Just another step in taking religious tentacles of evil our of our society.

Behold The Power Of Gold – Part 2

A few weeks ago I did a post on the value of investing in gold.  I was a little surprised by some of the responses that I received.  It was almost like the responses I get when discussing abortion, truthers and birthers.

This graph created by John C. Bogle and is in his book “Common Sense on Mutual Funds (2010).  It shows the returns for several investment classes from 1802 to 2008 in real dollars (real dollars are after an adjustment for inflation) (note2: The total return is a log scale).  John C. Bogle is the founder of Vanguard and is recognized as one of the greatest minds in the investment world. Mr. Bogle also had this to say about gold…

”  …gold is largely a rank speculation, for its price is based solely on market expectations.  Gold provides no internal rate of return.  Unlike stocks and bonds, gold provides none of the intrinsic value that is created for stocks by earnings growth and dividend yields, and for bonds by interest payments.  So in the two centuries plus shown in the chart, the initial $10,000 investment in gold grew to barely $26,000 in real terms.”  Common Sense on Mutual Funds(2010), Page 13.

With this additional support, I stand by my position that gold is not a good long term investment.
