Belief Blog Features Atheist Mom

Belief BlogThe top story on the CNN Belief Blog is about an atheist mom.  This story has over 5,000 comments and is about Deborah Mitchell.  She became known to the world after she submitted and essay to CNN iReport.   “Why I Raise My Children Without God,”  Here is a sample…

When my son was around 3 years old, he used to ask me a lot of questions about heaven. Where is it? How do people walk without a body? How will I find you?You know the questions that kids ask.

I am a non-believer, and for years I’ve been on the fringe in my community. As a blogger, though, I’ve found that there are many other parents out there like me. We are creating the next generation of kids, and there is a wave of young agnostics, atheists, free thinkers and humanists rising up through the ranks who will, hopefully, lower our nation’s religious fever.

The post did well until several readers marked the report as inappropriate.  CNN took the iReport down and the atheist powered internet went into action.  Our view were silenced and that would not stand.  Bloggers and social media shared the story and CNN put the iReport back up.  The even added this comment.

Update: CNN hasn’t flagged this iReport as inappropriate, but some community members have. This is a divisive topic, however it does not violate our Community Guidelines, so we ask people to please stop flagging it. We will continue to review the story as often as possible.

Religion has a problem… We own the internet and all they have is impotent rage – I love impotent rage.  If they ignore the story, it stays up, if they complain, it blows up.

Now the CNN Belief blog is telling the story to a whole new audience!  Our numbers are growing and we will not be kept quite.  We must remember to thank all of the religious nutters for making our stories, posts and billboards reach bigger audiences.

    Phil,

Great post. It shows how very inexplicably change occurs. All these little things happen, perhaps seeming random, and then all the sudden a tipping point is reached and real change is at hand.

    I’ve got a good feeling for 2013.
