Pastor Becky Fischer throws her arm into the air as an example while darting her eyes back and forth over the children in the audience. She yells in a fake high-pitched voice like a sleazy, overly animated kid’s show host and waits for them to imitate her answer. In one aisle a mother lifts the arm of her disinterested son, no more than 8 years old.

Jesus Camp is a 2006 American documentary film directed by Rachel Grady and Heidi Ewing about a charismatic Christian summer camp, where children spend their summers learning and practicing their prophetic gifts and being taught that they can “take back America for Christ.”According to the distributor, it “doesn’t come with any prepackaged point of view” and tries to be “an honest and impartial depiction of one faction of the evangelical Christian community”.

Jesus Camp debuted at the 2006 Tribeca Film Festival, and was sold by A&E Indie Films to Magnolia Pictures. Nominated for Best Documentary Feature at the 79th Academy Awards,^[3] the film was met with controversy that led to the closure of the camp.

This is a high end $70+ Million movie.   While this movie brought in $40 million around the world.  None of the distributors would show it in the US so it was only in 17 theaters.  The problem?  It showed christians as the bad guys.

This is on the corner of Green and Mathews.  Mathews is one way north from Green St. to University Ave.  You may find parking on Matthews.  If not go north one block and park in the giant lot (Lot B1) on Springfield (between Mathews and Goodwin)  This is open to the public after 5PM.  From U of I parking rules.

After 5 p.m. and before 2 a.m. on weekdays and anytime on weekends,
vehicles may park in any lot unless posted otherwise. There is no parking
in any lot on campus between 2 a.m. and 6 a.m.

So… Don’t be afraid of campus.  Just drive on Springfield or University then turn south on Goodwin.  Just south of Springfield turn right into the lot and park for free.  Less than a 1 block walk to corner of Green and Mathews.

I have had several people ask if we can have weekend meetings again.  It is tricky to get into the library and only a few join us for food in a separate location later.  I wanted to try Crane Alley and see if it is better for the group.  We will start the meeting at 2PM and you can eat and drink at any time.  They have over 100 beers to choose from (if you like that kind of thing).  When the meeting is over, you can stay and visit as long as you want.  The space will be ours from 2-5.  After 5 it will be open to the public.

Our last weeknight pub meeting had 15 people and in the past we would often have 20-30 people on the weekends and our numbers are larger on MeetUp and Facebook.  To make sure there was someone there to take care of us, I said we will have at least 20 people.  So, if you have not been to a meeting for a while, this is the time to show up!  Let’s make this a big crowd!  There is plenty of street parking and a giant parking deck just around the corner.

I will give a presentation, “Vaccines and the rise of the Anti-Vax Movement” and if they deliver it in time, I will show you the new DVD on Creationism from Dr. Dino (more on this later).
