Planned Parenthood Wins And Loses In Indiana

Planned Parenthood wins again against Mitch Daniels the Governor of Indiana.
The 7th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Chicago upheld the core portion of a lower court order that said Indiana cannot enforce a state law barring abortion providers from collecting Medicaid funds for any medical services.
Daniels is a crazy fundie christian and he wants to crush Planned Parenthood any way he can. He signed a law last year that would deny funds for doing legal medical procedures. In typical fundie style the ignore the fact that education and free birth control can actually reduce abortions 62-78%. What they really want is to control women and force them to have as many babies as possible. That is what successful religions do. They need more babies to offset their huge losses in the last few years.
U.S. District Judge Tanya Walton Pratt issued an order in June 2011 blocking parts of the law after Planned Parenthood challenged it. But the state appealed.
Because they are evil!
The appeals court upheld the part of Pratt’s order that said Indiana didn’t have authority to exclude a medical provider that qualifies for Medicaid. It said the law violated patients’ right to obtain medical care from the provider of their choice.
But, it is not all good news…
However, in today’s 2-1 decision, the 7th Circuit panel reversed part of the lower court’s ruling of last year. The appeals court said the state of Indiana was within its authority to discontinue funding from two federal grants Planned Parenthood had received totaling $150,000 from the Disease Intervention Services program. The 7th Circuit majority decision said Planned Parenthood had not shown its rights had been violated when the State made a decision about eligibility conditions for disbursing the federal block grant.
The right wing religious leaders and the GOP don’t want you to have the best medical care.
“The people’s elected representatives in the Legislature decided they did not want an indirect subsidy of abortion services such as payroll and overhead to be paid with taxpayer’s dollars and so crafted this law.”
How about a law that prevents my tax dollars going to wars. Why not make a law against that.
Take this opportunity to go and donate to Planned Parenthood. Tell them Mitch Daniels sent you!
